We are
constantly bombarded with facts about the health of people in our community.
Information is everywhere—reported in newspapers, on the radio, on TV, on
the internet—yet, at the same time, it is often impossible to locate a
specific statistic when we need it.
The
documents available here, entitled Toward a Healthy Hawaii 2010, are
the products of an effort by the Hawaii Outcomes Institute and the Hawaii
Department of Health to provide you with a source of health-related
information on a regular basis. A booklet of statistics was produced
for each of Hawaii’s four counties and for the state overall, containing a range of statistics chosen to represent the health of Hawaii’s
residents. These statistics come from 18 different sources, ranging from
national surveys such as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey to
data collected by the Hawaii Department of Health.
These
statistics are intended for use by advocacy groups, community health
organizations, policy makers, and individuals concerned with their
communities’ health.
These statistics can be used for:
-
program planning—addressing populations and areas in need
-
creating health policies
-
writing grant applications
-
community mobilization and action
-
setting benchmarks to measure the progress of our health.
As is
the case with all statistics, these must be used with care. The following
limitations apply to the data contained in these reports:
-
A
rate or percentage was only reported when the original number (numerator)
was greater than five
-
Often, at the community level, rates and percentages represent very small
numbers, even if they are greater than five
-
Use
caution when making comparisons—make sure the two numbers are different
enough to represent a real difference
Please
refer to the “Using and Understanding Data” document for a basic introduction to the
interpretation of statistics.
Each year, an additional years’ worth
of health information will be added to the
Toward a Healthy
Hawaii 2010 report, allowing us to eventually
see trends in the statistics over time. It will also allow us to measure
our progress in achieving our health improvement goals.
